Introduction

You don’t have to drive far from St. Louis to discover the region’s splendid patchwork of landscape, history and scenic beauty. A diversity of treasures is waiting to be discovered, and each area provides a delightful destination for one-day trips, some of which could easily turn into extended vacations.

Explore the rich European heritage of the region through its architecture and food; taste the bounty of the verdant valleys along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers; and retrace the steps of early pioneers who dug a toehold into the region two centuries ago. Each area has been molded by famous events and residents, including Daniel Boone, the Civil War, Mark Twain, the Trail of Tears, Abraham Lincoln and the great earthquakes of 1811-1812.

These day tours, which have appeared in the “AAA Midwest Traveler,” lead travelers to some of the most fascinating attractions and sights in Missouri and Illinois: museums, art galleries, historic homes, state capitols, nostalgic train rides, wineries, state parks, and national historic sites and monuments. The hours of operation and admission prices of the featured attractions were current at press time, but call ahead for updated hours and prices.
